Documenting losses properly
Anyone who records losses cleanly spots problems earlier and has evidence at hand. Here is what belongs in the record.
Why document?
- You see whether losses pile up in one house and can react early.
- The number of hens stays right so the laying rate is correct.
- You have records for advisors, vets and inspections.
What belongs in the record?
- Date
- Group or house
- Number of hens
- Cause, as far as known
- Note about anomalies
How often?
Ideally on every walk through the barn. Then numbers do not get lost and memory is fresh.
Keeping stock up to date
Losses, top-ups and removing a flock change the number of hens. Keep it current, otherwise you calculate on a wrong base.
Legal requirements
Which records are mandatory depends on farm, federal state, housing system and label. Ask your local veterinary office or advisor. Medicine use is documented separately according to legal requirements.
